Between the Catholic church and the railway, Hills Road has an advisory cycle lane on the southbound side. It wasn't always this way, though, and article 153(ii) of the City of Cambridge Area A (Consolidation) Order 1993 (as amended) provides for there to be a mandatory cycle lane there. While the white lines marking the old lane have been removed, there are still many upright signs to diagrams 958.1 and 959.1 in place. These are now unlawful, since under direction XXX of TSRGD 2002, they can only be placed in conjunction with road markings that are no longer there.
The correct upright sign for an advisory cycle lane is the "recommended route for pedal cycles" sign, diagram 967. TSM3 para 17.13 recommends placing it at the start of the lane, after every side road on the near side, and after any side road on the off side from which traffic can turn into the lane.
